BREAKING: Georgetown University Board of Directors Votes to Divest the University’s Endowment from Fossil Fuels

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

February 6, 2020

Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.

On the evening of February 6, 2020, Georgetown University announced its decision to divest its endowment from all fossil fuel companies. This decision comes after eight years of dedicated campaigning from GU Fossil Free; our members, past and present, could not be more proud.

We are thrilled that our university has taken this important step in supporting climate justice, student voices, and financial accountability.

Thank you to the Committee on Investments and Social Responsibility and the larger Georgetown administration for your continued dialogue over the years. Thank you to the Board of Directors for enacting a pragmatic and thorough divestment policy. Thank you to our alums who created the foundation for our campaign. Thank you to every faculty and staff member who signed onto our letter of support. Thank you to every student who voted in the referendum, wore a button, came to a meeting, or believed that Georgetown could be a more just institution. We did this together.

Hoya Saxa,
